Timber Transformation: How We Modernized a Rustic Main Floor

A behind-the-scenes look at how Remarkable Interiors starts every project — with a solid plan.

The House Had Incredible Bones — But It Needed a Vision

When our clients first reached out about their home in the Morgantown area, they were clear about one thing: they loved the location and they knew there was potential. What they couldn’t quite see yet was how to get there.

The home is a stunning timber frame — soaring ceilings, exposed wood beams, a dramatic stone fireplace, and floor-to-ceiling windows that frame the surrounding trees. It’s the kind of architecture that makes you stop when you walk in the door.

But the main floor wasn’t working. The kitchen layout made gathering difficult. The entry felt cluttered. The master bathroom was functional at best. The space had a heavy, dated feeling that didn’t reflect how the family actually wanted to live.

They knew it would take some help envisioning everything together. That’s exactly what we do.

Step One Is Always the Same: Build a Solid Plan

Before we talk about finishes, furniture, or any of the fun stuff — we talk about the plan. Every single time.

Our first step with the Timber Transformation was to walk the entire main floor together and do an honest assessment. What was working? What wasn’t? What did the family actually need this space to do for them?

What we identified quickly:

The kitchen was the biggest pain point. The layout made it impossible to gather around the island the way the family wanted to.

A built-in storage cabinet in the entry was chopping up the flow and making the space feel smaller than it was.

The master bathroom needed a complete rethink to make it practical for everyday life.

Once we understood the problems, we could start building the concept around the solutions.

From Problem List to Design Concept

Once we had our assessment and our floor plan locked in, we moved into concept development. This is where the vision starts to take shape — where we begin to translate the client’s inspiration images and lifestyle needs into actual design decisions.

For the Timber Transformation, the client was drawn to warm organic modern — creamy neutrals, natural wood textures, stone accents, and spaces that felt elevated but still grounded. The inspiration they brought us was beautiful. Our job was to honor that vision while making it work within a timber frame home that already had a very strong character of its own.

That balance — honoring what’s already there while transforming how it feels — is one of the most rewarding parts of this kind of project.

What Comes Next

A solid plan is just the beginning. In the next post in this series, we’ll walk you through why the floor plan has to come before any finish selections — and how getting that order right saves time, money, and a lot of second-guessing.

Follow along as we take this timber frame home from dated and disconnected to warm, modern, and completely intentional.
